Have you ever lost something so important to you that you solicited help to find it? In order for them to help you, you have to describe the item to them. You may make a reference to how big or small the item is, what color it is, or a specific identifying mark that it has on it like a sticker, a scratch in a particular spot or an upgrade you made to it. These ways that you describe the item will help them know for sure that they have found the item you have lost and not another item similar to it. The church is similar to this, we are to have identifying marks that we belong to Jesus. In our new series Are You My Church, we will make reference to the book Are You My Mother, by P.D. Eastman, in this book we see a bird hatching then immediately leaving the nest looking for it’s mother. After asking a kitten, a hen, a Dog, a Cow, a Car, a Boat, a plane, and a big thing if they were it’s mother, it finally found its actual mother. Sometimes the church looks to the wrong thing to claim its true identity. We will only find our true identity as a church if we are acting as the church is instructed to in God’s word.
In our new series we will look at the identifying marks of God’s church. We will then evaluate if we are acting in the way His church should be acting. Looking at topics like our love for God, our mandate to rejoice, our use/or lack of us of the gifts given to us, we will see if we have the distinguished marks of a church that truly belongs to God. My hope is that you will join us in this endeavor to evaluate our church practices and our own personal commitment to the Lord to see if we are HIS church.
This new series begins Sunday, September 5th and will take us to our series leading up to Christmas in December. I want to draw your attention to a particular Sunday. On September 19th we will be having a Celebration Sunday. Who doesn’t like to celebrate? We will be celebrating baptisms, child dedications, the installation of Pastor Brent, our new church members, and? Is there something we are missing? Is there something else we should be celebrating? If you can think of anything else or if you want to be one of our baptisms, child dedications, a new member please reach out to the church office and let us know. We are also working on a very cool (Top Secret) project that we hope to unveil to you as a church on this Sunday. I hope to see you there to Celebrate!
