As we begin a new year, it is natural to reflect on the past and look forward to what lies ahead. The turning of the calendar offers us a fresh start and a chance to align our priorities with God’s will. Scripture reminds us that our time on earth is limited, and how we use it matters deeply.
Psalm 90:12 says, “Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.” This verse challenges us to recognize the brevity of life and to use our days wisely. We don’t know how long we will live, but we do know that our time is finite. How can we make the most of the days God has given us?
Be Careful How You Walk
Ephesians 5:15-17 encourages us, “Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is.” These verses challenge us to be intentional with our time, making the most of every moment for God’s glory.
There is a crucial reminder in James 4:13-16, warning against the arrogance of making plans without acknowledging God: “You do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes. Instead, you ought to say, ‘If it is the Lord’s will, we will live and do this or that.'” As we set goals for the new year, let us submit our plans to the Lord, trusting in His sovereignty and seeking His guidance.
Clear Priorities for a Purposeful Life

Without clear priorities, it is easy to let less important tasks fill our days while neglecting what truly matters. God’s Word provides a framework for how we should live, urging us to seek first His kingdom and righteousness (Matthew 6:33). As we step into the new year, consider these four areas for setting goals:
1. Spiritual Goals
Our relationship with God should be our top priority. How can you grow in your faith this year? Consider:
- Daily prayer and Bible reading (just 15-20 minutes a day can take you through the Bible in a year).
- Regular worship and fellowship with other believers.
- Practicing spiritual disciplines such as fasting and intentional learning.
2. Physical Goals
Taking care of our bodies honors God, as they are temples of the Holy Spirit. Set goals for:
- Eating healthily and staying hydrated.
- Exercising regularly to maintain strength and energy for God’s work.
- Prioritizing rest and worship God in rest!
3. Relational Goals
God calls us to love others, starting with those closest to us. This year, think about:
- Strengthening your marriage or family relationships.
- Building deeper connections with your church community and friends.
- Being a light for Christ in your workplace or neighborhood.
4. Professional Goals
Whether you are working, retired, or serving in a different capacity, consider how you can glorify God with your time and talents:
- Pursue excellence in your work as an act of worship.
- Volunteer or mentor others in your field.
- Be intentional about using your skills to further God’s kingdom.
A Goal Without a Plan is Just a Wish
As you set goals, remember that action steps make goals attainable. Start small and be consistent. If you’re unsure where to begin, reading your Bible daily is a great place to start. We all have 24 hours in a day—how will you use yours to glorify God?
Let’s enter this new year with hearts full of purpose and lives centered on Christ. May we seek first His kingdom and make the most of the time we’ve been given. Together, let’s take hold of the opportunities ahead with faith and intentionality, knowing that God is with us every step of the way.
